Teens don’t come cheap, so chances are you are looking for ways to save
money in all areas in life, including your teen’s car insurance policy. It’s
no secret that newer drivers tend to be charged higher car insurance rates
than older drivers; this is because car insurance companies tend to view
newer drivers as higher insurance risks. They are less experienced than
older drivers. However, this doesn’t mean there is no way to get cheap car
insurance for your teen.
First, encourage your teen to make good grades in all of his or her classes.
Many car insurance companies offer discounts to teens for maintaining, or
going beyond, a certain grade point average. If your teen meets the grade
point average requirement of a car insurance company that offers discounts
to teens for good grades in school, you’re one step closer to finding cheap
car insurance for your teen.
Find out if your teen’s high school offers a driver education course as part
of their curriculum. Most high schools throughout the country offer a driver
education course to their students, and many of those high schools even
require students to take the driver education course once they’re of age.
Encourage your teen to take the class, or enroll in one outside of the high
school, and make a good grade, because many car insurance companies offer
discounts to drivers who have taken a driver education course.
Finally, don’t be too quick to cut your teen loose. Just because he or she
has a driver’s license – and possibly car – doesn’t mean your teen needs his
or her own car insurance policy. By keeping your teen on your car insurance
policy, you save money that would have otherwise been spent on your teen’s
car insurance policy – a policy that would have been much higher than yours.
Plus, adding another car to your car insurance policy could get you a great
discount.
